The Power of Nature for Mental Health and Well-Being
Mental health is a major concern for healthcare professionals, as nearly half of Canadians will experience mental health issues by the age of 40. Growing evidence supports the benefits of nature on mental health, and studies have shown that even small greening actions matter and have a positive impact on mental health.
The Power of Nature for Mental Health and Well-Being, a paper from the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects’ Human Health and Wellbeing Committee, explains how landscape architects, thanks to their multiple practice areas, can intervene on several fronts. Researchers, clients and designers can all work together to improve access to green spaces.
Great examples of this in practice are the tiny urban forests being planted in towns and cities around the world. Using a special method from Japan, called Miyawaki, these projected can grow a dense forest in just a few years. Find out more about tiny urban forests in this YouTube clip from the BBC World Service.
